Ubud draws people who are buying a landscape rather than a beach. Wellness and long-stay guests come for jungle, river and quiet, and they will pay for a house that opens to it. - Slopes need structure before architecture
- A ravine-edge plot needs retaining, foundations set into the slope and a serious drainage strategy before a plan means anything. On a valley site that structural work can be a large share of the build, and it is the part least visible in the finished photographs.
- Rain, damp and detailing
- Ubud is markedly wetter than the south. Deep overhangs, ventilated construction, treated timber and bamboo kept dry, and surfaces that dry out rather than trap moisture are what make a house last here.
- Water, land use and the subak
- Valley land interacts with springs, watercourses and Bali's subak irrigation system, and some parcels sit in agricultural or protected designations. Zoning, permitted use and access rights get verified before design.
