Sanur is Bali's east coast: sunrise, a reef-protected lagoon and a low-rise town that has been home to expatriate families and retirees for decades. It is the calmest place on the island to own a house, and the two villas we have completed here are both private family homes rather than rental stock.
What the ground in Sanur does to a design.
Sanur is settled in a way Canggu is not. Streets are established, the beachfront boardwalk runs for kilometres, the hospital and international schools are close, and the sea is swimmable with children in it. Buyers here are usually building somewhere to live for years, which shows up as more bedrooms, more shade and better storage than a rental villa would carry.
Who it suits
Families and long-term residents, retirees, and owners who want calm swimmable water and a town that already works.
- A low-rise town
- Sanur's character is horizontal, and Bali's fifteen-metre height limit is reinforced here by a townscape of low buildings and mature trees. Designs win space sideways, through courtyards and garden rooms rather than storeys.
- Coastal air is corrosive
- Salt-laden air attacks fixings, frames, hardware and air-conditioning units far faster than it does inland. Specifying marine-grade fixings and protecting exposed metal is not a luxury here, it is what stops a five-year-old house looking fifteen.
- Flat ground, shallow water table
- The coastal plain is flat with groundwater close to the surface, so pool construction, drainage and levels are engineered much as they are in Canggu.
